Transparent, trustworthy communication is an essential next step to ensure you get the full benefit of your climate efforts.

This document describes the next steps for Klimate to announce your carbon removal investment, plus tips to doing it on your own.

Consider this resource alongside your communications package to create a full tool-kit to credibly communicate about your investment.

1. Social Media Announcements

Klimate likes to highlight the work of our clients on social media, not just to celebrate you, but also inspire others using your action. These announcements can be high-level or delve into the strategy and portfolio you have chosen. They focus on the removal investment itself over branding, ensuring trustworthy, straightforward sustainability communication.

Why make an announcement of your own? Many companies today cite fear of greenwashing as the main barrier to publicly communicating climate action. This threat often leads to hesitation or even "green-hushing" – the suppression of sustainability efforts due to fear of being accused of greenwashing. This in turn hampers the progress that sustainable leadership can achieve. To avoid greenwashing, clearly and transparently state the investment that has taken place, refrain from making claims or generalisations, and focus on the impact that you can document, like your portfolio from Klimate.

Example 2: Strategy highlight

When drafting your own announcement, we’d recommend reflecting the language of the above post in your own voice. Insert your own strategy, portfolio mix, and which emissions it may compensate for. This is best met when coming from your own brand voice and perspective, so try answering: why did we invest?

2. Press Release

Crafting internal or external communications in your own brand voice is a key next step after investment, but can be difficult. Similar to a SoMe announcement:

  1. Focus on the investment that has taken place,
  2. provide key information and definitions,
  3. and refrain from making lofty statements or unsubstantiated claims.

Below is an example formula for crafting a release. Please note it describes a specific strategy where all emissions have been compensated for the previous year, but is not reflective of acceptable language in all posts. Create your own release in your own brand voice.

3. Impact Reporting

The necessary information to report on your investment clearly and accurately can be found primarily in your communications package.

Here are a few stellar, but different, examples of incorporating carbon removal in your impact report:

What they do well: clearly, and transparently describing the investment. This works best in the context of the other sustainability metrics and goals of the company.
